CIP Reflection
Written by: SGT (NPCC) Wee Sin WeiWhen we first reached the home, we fall in for some candid photo-taking. After that we went to the multi-purpose hall. Some of the cadets including the NCOs went to help push the elderly to the hall. It was quite a fresh experience for us pushing the wheelchair and some of old folks were quite friendly and they talked to us. After that we went to talk to the elderly. At first, I don’t know what to talk to them, but after a while I realised it was better to find some topics to talk to the elderly rather than staring at each other. I asked them if they had eaten and how they were feeling etc. Some of them replied but some of them didn’t. But it doesn’t matter if they replied us back or not.
Our objective was to make them happy so we gave them a card with well-wishes which we had personally prepared for them. Some of them saw the cards and smile appeared on their faces. I was quite happy to see them smile. Of course, we not only prepared cards for them but also we prepared some performances to entertain the old folks.Firstly was the Sec 1 with a skit on “Don’t forget the lyric”. After which, followed by the Sec 2 with some old songs to entertain the elderly. Well both levels did quite well given the short preparation time given to them.
Lastly was the Sec 3. They sang 3 songs. First was a Hokkien dialect song followed by an English song “Never be replaced” and lastly was a Chinese song “Xiao Wei”. I felt that “Xiao Wei” was the best out of the 3 songs because I saw some of the elderly were really enjoying the song.
After that the MCs for the day invited our CIs up on the stage to sing and to perform.
The CIs also invited the NCOs together and we sang some songs. Our CI Xiu Hao was good at entertaining the elderly. Overall the performance was quite good and some of the elderly did enjoy the performance.
After the performance, its time for the elderly to have their lunch and all of us were helping to push the elderly back to their place to have their lunch. Some of the cadets also help to stack back the chair.
Finally, we helped to clean up the garden at the back of the home. It was quite fun clearing up the dry leaves and the place was really clean after the clearing up.
After all, visiting the old folks’ home really created a deep impression in me as well as it exposed us to let us realised how fortunate we were and to treasure and cherish what we had right now.
Written by: SGT (NPCC) Chanel TanOn 22 November 2008, our school NPCC Unit visited the old folks’ home at Yishun. Before we reached the home, I felt very excited. When we reached there, we gathered all the old folks at the hall and started to perform for them. I was one of the MC for the day, quite nervous at the start but slowly I got used to it. As long as I could entertain the old folks, I felt satisfied and happy. The performance started with the Sec1 skit/ drama followed by the Sec2 singing and Sec3 singing. Ended up, we invited the CIs on stage to perform and made a grand finale. The performances were successful except that the old folks might not have enough energy to clap or to feel high. After that, we helped to do area cleaning at their garden. All of us went there with a smile, came back with a satisfied smile.
Written by: SGT (NPCC) Ryan NgIn the morning of 22 November 2008, we went to school, knowing the time we had waited for had arrived. The practice and effort put in would now bear fruit. We were finally ready to go to the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick.
The Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick was named after the great saint-philosopher and social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru. It was registered as a charity organisation in 1948. It promotes unity and friendship between the people, provide accommodation, facilities and service for the aged, destitute and persons in need of medical care. The home also provides help to the needy, be it financial, education or services.
We were exposed to reality that some people were less fortunate than us, and appreciated what we had. We also realised that many others who were less fortunate and required our care and concern. For me I found that a little care and concern, we were able to bring hope to those who needed it the most.
What started the CIP off were the performances put up by the Sec1s to 3s to entertain the old folks there. After seeing the smile on their faces, I felt that it was a job well done. Nothing beats us in seeing the smiles on their faces after the performances. Although some of them might not understand the performances, I could see that they appreciated the effort put in for the performances.
Interaction with the old folks might be difficult with the language barriers but some of us who knew Chinese dialects tried and we brought the message across to them. The old folks also got their souvenirs from us.
After this we went down to the garden to clear up the rubbish and dried leaves. Overall I felt that it was indeed a happy and memorial experience. Most of the things we did were returned to us in life. Indeed we had brightened up the old folks lives, and they too had brightened up ours.
