Secondary 3 Cadet Leaders' Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course

At 8th and 9th June 2009, the Secondary 3 Cadet Leaders went through the LMSC. Taking part in the same course were 600 more Cadet Leaders all over from different Areas and schools. On the first day of the course, schools were separated to different squads, fro, 1 to 10. We were in Squad 6, and the very first thing we went through was MOI (Methods of Instructions). Although we already went through MOI a few times, we still treated it seriously in order to improve our current skills. To do that , we initiated to be the first to teach the rest of the squad.

After MOI was the lecture on effective communication. The lecture we went through proved to be very useful, especially when we have to work as a team of Cadet leaders. This will equip us the ability to communicate effectively and accurately, while ensuring that the "message is being transferred to the other party.

Planning and Conflict Management lectures were also very useful. Through the Planning lecture, we improved our ability to create Proposals, Procedure, Lesson Plans, etc. This will definitely come in handy in the future. Conflict management will help us to resolve disagreements or arguments quickly and effectively by sorting and solving issues according to the different categories of conflicts and their specific solutions .

Goal Setting lecture was essential for leaders , for they have to set Goals in order to set a standard for their unit. Good goals will also help create good Teamwork and Leaders, while motivating everyone to achieve the goal. It is definitely a must for every Leader to have.

The next day, Cadet Leaders went through the main subject of the course, leadership lectures. We learned the definition of what means to be a "Leader" as well as the must0have skills and traits of one. We also went on and discovered our own leadership styles through the"DISC" personality test. Different personalities have different Positive and Negative abilities, it depends on the situation that they are used on. For example, A more Dominant and Influential leader will be most suitable for upholding the Discipline and Morale of te cadets, while a more Conscientious and Steady leader is more able to settle conflicts, problems and issues through details and opinions. Each of us have different abilities, and to maximize the impact, we need a strong Team, which is our next lecture.

Team Building and Teamwork, another important factor which helps us to bond and become a better unit together. When we have a Dominant and Influential person working with a Conscientious and Steady person, we will be able to improve our outcome as their different abilities are able to cover up for different situations. As such, "Together Everyone Achieves More" a T.E.A.M. is created. Cadet Leaders also went through games and activities which was help to help improve our team bonding.

Through this 2 day course, as Cadet Leaders we learned a lot of valuable skills, stacking those of which which learned from our CL Mentoring and Modular courses. We would like to thank the instructors for being good role models to us.
